Forrester Research, 07.12.2006: Smackdown: Rich Internet Applications Versus HTML

Forrester Research, 07.12.2006: Smackdown: Rich Internet Applications Versus HTML
by Ron Rogowski: "We found that, on average, RIAs outperform HTML interfaces; at the same time, RIA usability can fall prey to basic design mistakes. To make the most of their investments, firms planning to invest in RIAs must apply design best practices and run multiple tests on their RIAs before — and after — they go live."

With the rapid pace of activity in the RIA space, we can soon expect to see a major battle between standalone RIA platforms and new-breed brower-based apps.

Those working on the later would now have to focus on high levels of Usability and User Experience within HTMl UI, as a way to counter the shine of apps on RIA platforms.

I expect developers to take this competition very seriously and innovate. Soon your users would expect more from the apps.

Another important aspect is that RIA might be able to cater to very high end users with best-of-breed PC with great new Graphics card. What about the mass market of people who still have more ordinary computers with them?

Thanks for the very timely report.
